Summary
In summer of 2022, I began a wonderful hybrid-working experience at Amazon’s Development Center in Scotland. I worked as a UX Designer I with the PXF team (People eXperience Foundation) where I designed two net-new products for the document services team.
I created everything, from wireframes and sketches to high-fidelity mockups and prototypes. I worked closely with my design mentor, design leads, product managers, engineers, UX researcher and UX writer to create and prepare the products for launch.
With regards to research, I actively worked with the UX researcher within my team to conduct secondary research, interviews, and user testing for two rounds of UX research study and incorporated the feedback into my new designs.
During the 6 months, I successfully launched two versions of a product in multiple countries for both mobile web and desktop experiences. I also led a redesign of an existing employee document platform using brand-new design system components and patterns, the details of which I can discuss further in person.
As these are internal Amazon products, and due to my NDA, I am unable to share any specific details about my project on my portfolio. However, please feel free to contact me so I can share this information with you in a 1:1 conversation!
MY IMPACT
01 Shipped full end-to-end product within a 3 month period (twice), collaborating with multiple teams (i.e. engineers, product managers) across all stages, from research and design, to product launch.
02 Ran user research and testing to further understanding of user pain points for a second, redesign project currently in the works.
03 Contributed to design and maintenance of components and design patterns of the design system/component library
MY LEARNINGS
01 When discussing first concepts with cross-functional colleagues, bringing visuals is very advantageous. I was able to communicate with engineers, product managers, and UX researchers about the timeframe and feasibility of my projects by better by providing low-fidelity wireframes and visual references.
02 During my internship, I've had the opportunity to speak with senior designers and developers, and one of the most important things I've done is to ask them plenty of "why" and "how" questions to better understand the thought process behind their work. There is no better approach to get knowledge (and motivation!) than to consult established experts in the field.
03 Having to put in additional work to build and maintain professional connections while working remotely with a team that spans many time zones was a challenge. I'm pleased I took the time to get to know everyone of my coworkers, even though I only had to talk to a few of them on a regular basis. It helped me become a better all-around designer and integrate into the team more quickly. In particular, it helped me see the significance of my labour to the smooth functioning of the whole.
